What is the point of Ramadan?

The point of Ramadan is for muslims to gain God-consciousness and thus become righteous as it states in the Quran.

{O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous. [Fasting for] a limited number of days …} [Quran 2:183–184].

Being good for only the month of Ramadan

Ramadan is a time that the muslim community strive to do extra good deeds and focus on worshipping God. However some people feel that this is somewhat hypocritical if muslims are bad for the remaining 11 months of the year.

Naturally it is better to be good on a more permanent basis, however being realistic it is quite difficult to be perfect all of the time (we’re not angels but we should endeavour to achieve perfection). But even if we think of our lives as a game show where if you get more good points than bad then on the Day of Judgement we can be in a better place when we all stand in front of God. So technically speaking having 1 month of good deeds in your account is better than having no good deeds against your name for the entire year.

So in summary, doing good in Ramadan should not be discouraged regardless of what happens outside of it. However we should try our best to maintain the good habits that we have adopted in the blessed month of Ramadan as we are still accountable for our actions.

What are good habits to adopt in Ramadan?

  • Performing all the prayers including the Sunnah salah
  • Exhibited good manners
  • Showing patience when angry/annoyed/agitated
  • Giving more in charity
  • Learning to be more forgiving (life is short so don’t hold grudges!)
  • Reading more Quran

What bad habits should I stop in Ramadan?

  • Smoking
  • Swearing
  • Getting angry
  • Drinking
  • Boy/Girlfriends (haram relationships)
  • Clubbing
  • Drugs
  • Judging Others
  • Backbiting
